520 3 _aThis book offers an integrated, comprehensive assessment of agri-food innovation theories and their applications. It explores the models, methods and metrics of innovation analysis in the context of a single centre - the global agrifood and oilseeds complex centred in Saskatoon, Canada. Over the past 10 years, a series of targeted yet complementary studies have been conducted on the Saskatoon economic region and its agri-food and biotechnology sectors. These studies, in combination, represent a unique examination of the application of innovation theory to a single region. The qualitative and empirical evidence from these studies provides a comprehensive picture of how innovation theory and evidence is supported, at least in the Saskatoon region, which may be a reasonable archetype for any advanced industrial agglomeration engaged in the global marketplace. Chapter 2 reviews the main-line economic counterfactual for the more contextual innovation theories. The next six chapters review the theories, methods and evidence from applications in Saskatoon for the three competitive perspectives: Chapters 3 and 4 for place-based clusters, Chapters 5 and 6 for process-based innovation systems and Chapters 7 and 8 for people-based creative communities. Chapter 9 then investigates a range of new theories and methods that incorporate institutions, individuals and ideas in new ways. Chapter 10 takes what is known and assesses how it might better contribute to evidence-based policy making.
