Abstract: This volume, which is the first of the two volumes on the proceedings of the General Meeting of the British Mycological Society in April 2000, consists of twelve chapters on macrofungi in western and tropical regions. The topics covered comprise ectomycorrhizal and floristic studies (chapters 1-4), taxonomy (chapter 5), lignicolous fungi (chapters 6 and 7) and their enzymatic activity (chapter 8), insect-fungal relationship (chapter 9), and conservation and mycophagy (chapters 10 and 11). Chapter 12 discusses the modern technologies that can be applied to the cultivation of edible fungi, the majority of which originate from the tropics.
